Dr. Lars Thunell is a Swedish businessman and expert on emerging markets and banking crises. Lars is a senior advisor to the Blackstone Group, and is a non-executive director and vice chairman of Sithe Global Power LLP, a director of Fisterra Energy and Chairman of Global Water Development Partners, all of which are part of the Blackstone Group.
He is the Chairman of African Risk Capacity Insurance Company Limited, a not-for-profit mutual insurance company that insures African countries against the impacts of climate change. He sits on an advisory panel at the African Development Bank. He is also a director of Access Health International. He was appointed as an Independent Non-Executive Director of Standard Chartered PLC in November 2012 and, until June 2015, served as a non-executive director of Kosmos Energy.
Dr. Thunell was previously Chief Executive Officer of the International Finance Corporation, a member of the World Bank Group, the largest global development institution focused on the private sector. Lars led IFC’s overall strategic direction to promote sustainable private sector development and refocused IFC’s efforts on the poorest countries, especially in Africa.
From 1997-2005, Lars was CEO of SEB, Sweden’s leading corporate bank. From 1994-1997, he was CEO of Trygg-Hansa a Swedish insurance group. During the Swedish banking crisis, he was President and CEO of Securum, the Swedish Government’s “bad bank,” from 1992-1994.
